Earlier this week, Perfect Game USA announced its Preseason All-American Teams to recognize the top underclass high school baseball athletes in the U.S (Class of 2015, 2016). Among the esteemed honorees were seven members of the IMG Academy Baseball program. Junior OF Eric Feliz led the way, being recognized among the Preseason All-American First Team. BRADENTON -- The answer to a baseball trivia question took some cuts during batting practice, walked behind home plate and leaned against the netting that serves as protection for the fans sitting in the best seats at McKechnie Field.
Then John Ryan Murphy tried to put into perspective last September at Yankee Stadium, where the Bradenton native and IMG Academy product became the last man to catch a pitch from Mariano Rivera in a major-league game.
The New York Yankees and Miami Marlins agreed to a two-game series deal to bring the first Major League Baseball games to Panama for the first time since 1947. The "Legend Series" will be played on March 15th-16th at Panama City's Rod Carew Stadium and will honor the legacy of newly retired Yankees great Mariano Rivera, the game's all-time saves leader.
IMG Academy alumnus Casey Mullholland, a member of the Class of 2010, was named the Pitcher of the Week by the American Athletic Conference, announced on Monday. The standout pitcher is third in the AAC in strikeouts, with 19 to date. The Bradenton, Fla. native pitched and played in the outfield at IMG Academy, and was a member of the 2009 team that went 32-1 on the season and went four-for-four in national tournaments.
The 2014 Perfect Game USA All-Region and All-American teams were announced this week, and 10 IMG Academy student-athletes were among the honorees.
BAYSHORE GARDENS -- Andrew DiLacqua doesn't focus on stats, even when they are pretty solid.
The senior center fielder takes that approach, because it helps him from pressing when going through a slump and keeps him from letting off the throttle when he's performing at a high level.
And this season, DiLacqua is excelling at IMG Academy.
"I could be hitting 1.000 or .100, I have no idea," said DiLacqua, who is hitting .478 this season with a .586 on-base percentage to lead the Ascenders in both categories among regular players.
TAMPA, Fla. -- Yankee catcher John Ryan Murphy had the best seat in Tampa for Masahiro Tanaka's second bullpen session. Crouching behind home plate, Murphy thought Tanaka's 35 pitcher were "very impressive."
“What surprised me was the effort level looked minimal and it was coming out really good,” Murphy said.
Tanaka throws six pitches (fastball, splitter, slider, curveball, cutter and change) so Murphy, Joe Girardi and an interpreter discussed how to have signal for all of them.
"You need a lot of fingers," Girardi said.
The IMG Academy Baseball season is fresh underway, and in its third game, the team's bats caught fire and the Ascenders blasted Arlington Country Day in Jacksonville, Fla., 18-0. On the offensive end, SS Taylor Lane, a Florida Gator signee went 3-for-3 with a homerun, and OF Luke Bonfield, an Arkansas Razorbacks signee, went 1-for-2 with a homerun. Outfielder Andrew DiLacqua, an Arizona State signee, contributed 4 RBI with a 4-for-4 night at bat, while crossing home twice.
