Sun Shines Again on Chris Weinke

Chris Weinke is back in football where he belongs, feels most comfortable and believes he will make a difference with youth.

Weinke, Florida State's former Heisman Trophy winner, has landed at the renowned IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., where he has teamed with iconic NFL head coach/broadcaster John Madden to build the IMG Academy football program.

IMG Academy already has conquered the realm of elite youth training for tennis and golf. Now it's eyeing football.

The institute has announced it would activate plans for the John Madden football academy this summer, led by director and former Florida State quarterback Chris Weinke.

Currently, the academy will largely consist of summer camps ranging anywhere from $499 to $2,000 taking place on its 350-plus-acre facilities in Bradenton. But the long-term goal is to field enough players to support full-time residency teams for 8- to 18-year-old youth players.

He’s even branded his own video game series.

Now, John Madden is coming to Bradenton. Well, not directly, for the most part.

The Pro Football Hall of Famer is partnering with former Florida State quarterback Chris Weinke — a national champion and Heisman Trophy winner — for a youth football initiative called the IMG Academy football program.

Former Florida State star quarterback Chris Weinke will team with NFL Hall of Fame coach John Madden in launching and running a new youth football camp and training center – the IMG Academy football program – in Bradenton.

Weinke, who led the Seminoles to an undefeated season and the 1999 national championship team and then won the 2000 Heisman Trophy, will be the academy’s director.

Weinke's second chapter in coaching

Chris Weinke, the former Florida State Seminoles Heisman Trophy winner who had been living in Austin and spending most of his time golfing since his NFL career ended in 2007, is getting involved in football again.

The 37-year-old just was named the director of the new IMG Academy football program in Bradenton, Fla.; it launches in a few months. The program's curriculum will consist of John Madden's teachings and coaching philosophy and is aimed at football players from ages 8-18. It's an interesting move for both the former college star and for IMG.

John Madden is returning to the world of coaching.

Madden will be teaming with Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke and IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., to launch the IMG Academy football program.

"This is one of those dreams that you have for a long time, to work with kids and have camps, and do those kinds of things," Madden said. "I think this is the perfect opportunity."

The IMG Academy football program will hold position-specific and all-purpose camps through the year, starting with Kickoff Weekend on June 4-6.
