Two recent IMG Academy Golf alumni, true freshman and Class of 2013 graduates, are dominating the links in Division-II. First to make a splash was Mario Beltran. The Valencia, Spain native made waves through October when he won the individual title in back-to-back appearances for the Buccaneers. The first title came at the Guy Harvey Invitational in Palm Beach Springs, Fla., October 7-8. Beltran tied with teammate Adam Svensson for individual honors at five-under 211, and they led the team to the overall team title.
The IMG Junior Golf Tour got underway for its fifth event of the season at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Fla., Oct. 19-20. The Girls 15-18 division had a dramatic finish between the IMG Acaemy Golf program's Symba Xu, a native of China, and Thailand’s Jaravee Boonchant. Both players entered the scoring tent tied at three-under 143. With more than a third of the field looking on, 14-year old Xu birdied the 14th hole and edged out Boonchant for the win in her second appearance on Tour this season.
The IMG Academy Golf program's Jose Montano, a native of Bolivia, carded one of the biggest wins of his junior career at the AJGA Burgett H. Mooney, Jr. Rome Classic presented by State Mutual Insurance Company, held at the Coosa Country Club in Rome, Ga., Oct. 11-14. Montano turned in a 10-under 203 to take the top spot.
The IMG Academy Golf program's Pedro Junqueira added another title to his resume by winning the 36th annual Itanhangá Open Championship, held in his hometown of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which concluded on Oct. 13. Junqueira led from wire-to-wire, but a slow start on the second day left the door open for André Tourinho, the top-ranked amateur in Brazil, who came back to tie things up on the 18th hole. With each player tied at 222 apiece on the third day, the playoff took place on the 18th hole.
Playing on the IMG Junior Golf Tour over the weekend at Sara Bay Country Club, IMG Academy Golf program student-athletes won three out of four of the age divisions. In the Boys 15-18 division 14-year old Brandon Wang of Houston, Texas played up in the Boys 15-18 division for the first time. Wang got off to an impressive start with a 67 (-5) on Saturday to gain an early five-stroke cushion. Wang was three-over par on Sunday, but it was enough secure his first career 15-18 division title with a two-under 142 total.
Barry University's No. 1-ranked men's golf team won the Guy Harvey Invitational, using a 10-under 854 to captured their second straight 54-hole tournament of the season. Barry newcomer and IMG Academy Golf program alumnus, Mario Beltran, and teammate Adam Svensson were crowned co-champs, each shooting 5-under 211 to force a playoff with Flagler's Spencer Schindler.
The IMG Academy Golf program's Latanna Stone added another trophy to her collection by winning the 13-15 division of the FSGA event at Timacuan Golf and Country Club in Lake Mary, Oct. 5-6. Twenty-six girls teed off in the event, and Stone found herself in a battle with Haydyn Gibson and Kelsey Zeng, both of Orlando, Fla. Stone got off to a hot start, tying for the low round with a 71 to open, matched only by Gibson.
The IMG Academy Golf program's Mika Miyazato shot three-over-par 75 on Sunday to win the Japan Women's Open Golf Championship by a single stroke at Sagamihara Golf Club's East Course. Miyazato finished at even-par 288 after starting the final round with a five-stroke advantage. Miyazato fended off a late surge by second-place finishers Miki Saki and Erika Kikuchi, who each finished tied for second at one-over 289.
