The IMG Academy Golf program's Qi Wen Wong was named as the PGA Junior Series Player of the Year, announced this week. A native of Singapore, Wong is the only player to have won multiple events on the PGA Junior Series this year, with back-to-back victories at Penn State (July 10-12) and Purdue (July 22-24), to qualify for the PGA Junior Series Championship over the summer.
The LPGA Symetra Tour's season-long Volvik Race for the Card has come to an end this week, and 10 of the season’s best golfers have earned the ultimate reward, their 2014 LPGA Tour card. Two of those recipients were IMG Academy Golf program alumni Guilia Molinaro and Jaclyn Sweeney by virtue of finishing among the top-10 on the money list. Molinaro, a native of Villorba, Italy (Class of 2008) finished third on the money list with $39,848, while Sweeney, a native of Andover, Mass.
IMG Academy Golf program alumnus Peter Uihlein, a member of the Class of 2008, was one stroke shy of breaking 60 for the first time in European Tour history this week. Uihlein's eagle putt on the final hole veered inches away from the cup, forcing him to settle for an incredible 12-under 60 at Kingsbarns in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Uihlein's performance matched the all-time course record, and was only the 17th round of 60 ever recorded on the European Tour.
IMG Academy has announced that senior Jacqueline Bendrick of Mercer Island, Wash. has been named as a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist, and classmate Gregory Hunter (pictured, left) of Chicago, Ill. has been named as a National Achievement Scholarship semifinalist.
IMG Academy Golf program alumna Hannah Yun (2004-08), won her first-career Symetra Tour title this week at the Volvik Championship in Kissimmee, Fla., Sept. 20-22. Yun carded a final round three-under 69 to secure her first Tour victory. Yun finished with an astounding 14-under 202 total for the event, staving off Canada's Alexa Sharp by two strokes. With the win, Yun rocketed up the Symetra Tour money list from No. 48 all the way to No. 18. With a strong enough finish in Symetra Tour Championship, Sept.
Over the weekend, the IMG Academy Golf program's Louie Liu and Ariel Yu won their divisions in the U.S. Kids event at Crescent Oaks Country Club in Tarpon Springs, Fla., Sept. 22. Playing in the Boys 8s division, Liu secured a one-stroke victory in the single round event after shooting a solid round of 42.Meanwhile, playing in the Girls 10-11 division, Yu dominated, shooting 39 for a commanding six-stroke win.
