Steve Frey – HS Wood Bat Coordinator

2013 wood bat leagueSteve graduated from William Tennent High School (PA) in 1981. In 1997, he was elected into the William Tennent High School Hall of Fame. While studying at Bucks County Community College (PA), Steve played on the NJCAA League Championship team in 1983. The college has since retired his number (#4). For ten years, he has been a guest lecturer on Stress In Sports at the college. In 1983, Steve was drafted by the New York Yankees to begin his 17-year career in professional baseball. He played eight seasons in the Major Leagues with the Montreal Expos, Anaheim Angels, San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners, and the Philadelphia Phillies. He is currently a member of the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association.

Steve has participated in various baseball clinics and camps nationwide while playing professionally. In addition to his national reputation, Steve’s achievements have been recognized locally as well. In 1991, he was awarded The Bucks County Courier Times Twin Sports Award for Outstanding Achievement and Outstanding Relief Pitcher in 1990. Also, The Pennsylvania American Legion presented him with the Graduate of the Year Award in 1996. The American Legion award recognizes individual citizenship, sportsmanship, general good conduct, integrity, and playing ability. In addition, Steve also received the prestigious Tom Landry Award in 1995 for his involvement with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Upon retiring, Steve owned and operated a baseball academy in Pennsylvania for 5 years before moving to Florida to be in his current position at IMG Academy. He joined the IMG Academy staff in 2004 and is in his 9th year as the Head Pitching Coach. During the academic school year, Steve serves as the Varsity Pitching Coach. This summer, Steve is the Coordinator for the High School Wood Bat League. Steve brings a high energy approach to the game with the ability to communicate well with all ages, skills and ability level.


Dave Shepard - 14U & 12U Wood Bat Coordinator

2013 wood bat leagueCoach Shepard has been a member of the IMG Academy baseball staff since August 2007, serving as the JV pitching coach for the past 6 seasons. In addition to his duties as JV pitching coach, he works with pitchers on the other Academy teams (Post Grad, Varsity, 15U) throughout the year.

The Hornell, NY native was a highly decorated athlete in several sports (Baseball, Football, Cross Country, Indoor Track) while attending Hornell High School. After graduating in 1992, Coach Shepard accepted a scholarship to play baseball at Division II Mansfield (PA) University. At Mansfield, his team participated in the Division II World Series during his freshman and sophomore years. After his junior year, he transferred to Clemson University for his senior season which culminated in a 3rd place finish at the College World Series in Omaha, NE. 

In 1996 Coach Shepard was drafted in the 3rd round by the Cincinnati Reds following his senior season. His 10-year professional career included playing for the New York Yankees organization, Atlantic and Northern independent leagues and Puerto Rico and Venezuela winter leagues. His career peaked at Triple-A with the Yankees, and included a Double-A championship in 2002 with the Norwich Navigators of the Eastern League.
