Freshmen Scott Weathersby and Casey Mulholland pitched the Blue team to a 7-3 victory against the Red team Monday afternoon at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
Weathersby went three innings, allowed two hits and one unearned run. Mulholland scattered three hits across three innings of work. At the plate sophomore Preston Overbey powered the Blue team as he reached base three times including a two-run double.
Mulholland, a freshman from IMG Academy., who has recovered from Tommy John surgery, said it was good to be back pitching again.
“I felt alright. Just getting a feel for things out here, getting used to transition,” said Mulholland, who struck out one and walked none in addition to the three hits. “It was definitely a building process, and I finally found my stuff.”
Mulholland has been through a long process of surgery and rehab over the last year and a half. He says he’s about back to where he was before the March, 2010, surgery.
“I’m getting definitely where I need to be,” said the 6-foot-4 right-hander. “Coach (Rich) Levy (Ole Miss strength and conditioning coach) is pushing me to get bigger and stronger. I’ve gained about 10 pounds since I’ve been here. I’m throwing a lot being a two-way guy. Arm’s kinda here and there some days. But everything feels great. Body feels great. Definitely arm’s feeling good,”
Mulholland has played right field in the intrasquads that he didn't pitch.
“It’s definitely fun," said Mulholland, who actually committed to Ole Miss in 2009 but was delayed in his arrival for a year because of the surgery and rehab. "The team’s coming together and the new guys are starting to get a feel for the older guys. We’re starting to work together. I’m looking forward to what will happen in the spring, because the team chemistry right now is great.”
