IMG Academy 14U Wood Bat League Wednesday Game Recaps: Tarpons Slip by Wahoos 6-5

Upon their arrival on Sunday, the IMG Academy 14U Wood Bat League players have gotten their first exposure to the IMG Academy experience. On the field, players have received extensive training on baseball fundamentals as well as proper mechanics. Off the field, the players have been introduced to the Athletic & Personal Development program and the comprehensive performance training they will experience in the coming weeks. After two days packed with on-and-off-the-field training, players were more than excited to officially kick off the 14U WBL season with its first round of games Wednesday afternoon. Here is a look at the Wednesday's Game of the Day as well as box scores from around the league:

Game of the Day: Tarpons Slip by Wahoos 6-5

For Opening Day, both the Tarpons and and Wahoos sent their best to the mound in the form of McKinley Bell and JT Parsons, respectively. Both pitchers would pitch extremely well in their debut as the game was relatively quiet early on. The Wahoos' Jonathan Miller scored the only run in the first four innings thanks to a single from Brandon Hamlet. After the two starting pitchers exited, the Wahoos blew the game open in the bottom of the 5th inning. Mike Wilson drew a base on balls to lead off the inning followed by a sac bunt from Parsons. Thanks to the bunt, Wilson would soon score thanks to heads-up baserunning right before Miller and Parker Haskin both drew walks of their own to set the table for Hamlet. With a 2-0 count, the Wahoos 3-hitter laced a ball to right-center for a 2-run single. Hamlet would soon score an a Tarpon error to make it a 5-0 game.

It wasn't pretty but the Wahoos battled back to score 5 runs of their own in the top of the 6th inning. With walks to Matt Burlage, Bell and Sean Irick as well as a slew of Tarpon errors, the Wahoos knotted the game at 5-5. Heading into the 7th with the score still tied, the Tarpons tacked on what would be the difference in the game thanks to Burlage who led off the inning by taking one for the team and would eventually score thanks to past ball. With the lead heading into the bottom of the 7th, the Tarpons were depending on Jarred Delarso to seal the victory after working a scoreless 6th inning. Delarso finished what he started in the 6th inning thanks to a stellar game-ending double play by the Tarpon defense that secured the first Tarpons victory of the season.
