Game of the Day: Marauders Upset Conquistadors in Big Match-Up 4-1
In a potential future playoff match-up on Thursday, the third-place Marauders took on the Conquistadors who entered the 9-inning contest tied for first in the WBL. In a pitching match-up between the Conquistadors' big right-hander Garrett Schultz and the Marauders' lefty Logan Allen (who entered the game with a 3.09 ERA), it was clear that runs were going to come at a premium. Neither team was able to score in the first two innings but the Marauders broke it open in the 3rd inning with 3 runs, which would prove to be more than enough for Allen.
A one-out double from Christian Bloesl sparked the Marauder offense before Max Furbee and Allen soon followed with back-to-back singles. This brought up the Marauders' 5-hitter in Taishi Kato who stepped up to the plate with 2 runners on and 2 outs. Put in the 5-spot because of his ability to knock in key runs, Kato wasted no time doing just that, driving the first pitch to right-field for a 2-RBI double and making it a 3-0 game.
The Conquistadors wouldnt score their first run until the 4th when Mitchell Gallagher and Dan Kennon played a "2-man game" with Gallagher reaching on a single then advancing to third on a throwing error and wild pitch. With Gallagher now in prime scoring position, Kennon did his job with a sac fly to center, scoring Gallagher and making it a 3-1 game. Unfortunately for the Conquistadors, this would be the only run they would score as Allen was dominant through 8 innings. The lefty scattered 6 hits while only allowing one earned run and compiling a season-high 10 strikeouts.
The Marauders would add an insurance run in the 6th with another big single and stolen base from Kato before an RBI-triple from Matt Smith. Sam Chandler would take over for Allen in the 9th to earn the save with a big game-ending double play. Final Score: Maurauders 4 Conquistadors 1
With the Conquistadors loss, the Hurricanes took over sole possession of first place with their win against the Manatees. The Conquistadors now sit 1 game behind the Hurricanes with the Marauders keeping pace at 2 games back.
