With the playoffs beginning this afternoon, all 6 IMG Academy 14U Wood Bat League teams are focused on taking home the title during Championship Week. With teams jockeying for position in the final week of the regular season however, several players emerged and are catching fire at just the right time as their teams head to the playoffs. While almost every player is improving, here are the two players who really stepped up their game last week:
Player of the Week - Brandon Mabry (Royals)
Perhaps one of the biggest reasons why the Royals were able to secure a first-round bye last week was the play of Brandon Mabry. A consistent force in the heart of the lineup for the Royals, Mabry shined in the final week of the regular season hitting 7-12 in 4 games. Not only was Mabry getting on base, he was both scoring and driving in runs, totaling 6 runs and 5 RBI. The 1B/3B also showed his speed all week hitting an incredible 3 triples while also swiping 6 bases. The game of the week for Mabry came on Friday when he went 2-4 with a triple and 3 RBI, leading the Royals to a 12-6 victory over the Tarpon. With playoffs beginning this week, Mabry is a player to keep your eye on.
Pitcher of the Week - Tanner Beachy (Ospreys)
The big left-hander showcased his rubber arm this week, pitching in every game for the Ospreys as they secured their number #1 seed. With a combination of both starting and relief appearances, Beachy was dominant throughout the week, not allowing a single run. While his strikeout numbers were low, Beachy did an excellent job of controlling thestrike zoneand pitching to contact. The lefty was ahead in the count early and often as his first-pitch-strike percentage of 63.4% was near tops in the league. With the potent Ospreys offense behind him, Beachy earned the win in 2 of his 4 appearances and catapulted the Ospreys into the postseason.
