IMG Academy Bollettieri Tennis Latest Headlines

Jankovic is Bollettieris 10th No. 1

BRADENTON - Jelena Jankovic's ascension to the No. 1 spot in the Sony Ericsson Women's Tennis Association ranking represents a personal milestone for Bradenton tennis guru Nick Bollettieri, who has now worked with 10 players who have achieved the No. 1 position.

Bollettieri, the founder of the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy at IMG Academy, coached Jankovic from 1997-2003 when she trained alongside such top players as Maria Sharapova and Tatiana Golovin.

Other Bollettieri proteges who have reached No. 1 include Sharapova, Andre Agassi, Boris Becker, Jim Courier, Martina Hingis, Marcelo Rios, Monica Seles, Venus Williams and Serena Williams.

"We are pretty fortunate," Bollettieri said in a prepared statement. "It is an unbelievable feat and shows the success of the academy at the professional ranks. But it is important to note that there are many more players who go on to succeed at the collegiate level."

Jankovic, 23, replaced Ana Ivanovic at No. 1. Jankovic won her sixth career title in May at the Italian Open in Rome and reached the semifinals of the Australian and French Opens.
