About Marcelo Carrera
Marcelo Carrera was born October 1, 1962 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Marcelo spent time between USA and Argentina until he moved to the city of Mar del Plata, south of Buenos Aires were he started playing organize soccer. At age 15 he started his pro soccer career for Once Unidos Soccer Club.
At age 16 he moved to the city of Buenos Aires to play for Club Atletico Independiente First Division side. He was member of the Independiente team that won the Argentinian Championship 1983, Copa Libertadores 1984 and also defeated Liverpool 1-0, in the 1984 World Club Championship. Among his teammates were Jorge Burruchaga who scored the winning goal for Argentina in the final against Germany in the 1986 World Cup played in Mexico.
In 1986, he moved to the US, and signed with the New York Express an expansion team in Major Indoor Soccer League.
Then he moved to Canton, Ohio where he played with Canton invaders in the American Indoor Soccer Association 1988, 1989, 1990 winning the Championship all three years, also played outdoor soccer for the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers 1988, 1989, 1990 winning one Championship with Strikers defeated Boston Bolts in the final scoring the two winning goals and one National Championship defeating the San Diego Nomads 3-1. Marcelo scored one goal, had one assist and was named MVP.
In 1991 he moved to Dallas Texas and played for the Dallas Sidekicks of the MISL. He has also played for the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the APSL.
In 1992 went back to Argentina and played for Club Atletico Talleres First Division.
1993 moved back to Chicago and played for the Chicago Fire, and the Canton Invaders, same year he was invited to training camp with USA National team coach by Bora Milutinovic. Also this year he became U.S. Citizen
1995 played for the New York Centaurs in the A-League
In 1996 he was selected by the Columbus Crew in the inaugural Player Draft. He played three seasons for the Crew in 1996-1997, 1997-1998 and 1998-1999 and was also Captain for the 1997-1998 season. Marcelo's nickname with the Columbus Crew was "The Maestro" for his ability to pass anywhere on the field and score fantastic goals. In 1997 off season he signed on loan for the Cleveland Crunch Indoor Team, before eventually returning to the Crew to finish his stint with Columbus..... a total of 70 appearances.
He also played the 1999-2000 indoor season with the St. Louis Ambush.
He also was named to APSL All Star Team in 1989, 1991 outdoor League and NPSL All Star Team, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1994 for the indoor league.
In 2000 he returned to the Columbus Crew as an assistant coach for one season. In this year Marcelo developed the ability to coach talented players at the professional level and translate his skills and passion to them.
From 2000 to 2008 he was the Director of Coaches with Boca United Soccer Club, owkring with youth players and teaching his philosphy and passion for the game.
In July 2008 moved to Bradenton, Florida where He started working for IMG Academy as the head of the IMG girls program. His experience, passion and ability to work with the girls makes him perfect to develop young talent in our professional environment every day.
Marcelo holds a USSF Coaches “A” License and he speaks Spanish and English.
