Both the Under-19 and Under-18 Boys teams at The Soccer Academy have become Tampa Bay Sun Bowl Champions for the second consecutive year. The tournament, in its 30th year, took place from December 27th through 30th in various locations across Hillsborough and Polk Counties. Participating teams come from across the United States.
The Soccer Academy Under-19 Boys team, coached by Ferdinand DeMatthaes, has become the Tampa Bay Sun Bowl Blue Division champion, having defeated MEGU Fusion 2-0 in the final. The team established a new tournament record, having won the six tournament games scoring nineteen goals, with zero goals against.
The captain of the Under-19 team, Alejandro Caiaffa, has been invited to training camp with the prestigious Barcelona of Spain club. He is wished the best of luck.
The Soccer Academy’s Under-18 Boys team, coached by Tom Durkin, became the Tampa Bay Sun Bowl Under-19 Boys Orange Division champion. The team defeated HFC 89 Red 2-1 in the final match.
According to the tournament web site, the purpose of the Sun Bowl is “to provide the best competition on the best fields with the best officiating possible.” Additionally, college coaches are encouraged to attend the tournament for scouting purposes. In 2007, scouts from over fifty-five elite colleges and universities were signed in and recruiting at the tournament.
