It is known as "The Greatest Road Trip in Sports." For week 2 of the OlympusUS Open Series, IMG Academy Bollettieri tennis program alum traveled all the way out to California to compete in two different tournaments for themen and women's draws. For the women, they will be competing in theBank of West Classic at Stanford. For the men, they will be competing in the Farmers Classic at UCLA.
In the Bank of West Classic, the two impressive IMG Academy Bollettieri tennis program alum include Maria Sharapova and Sabine Lisicki. The last time these two ladies met was in the semifinals of this year's Wimbledon. There is a possibility that they could meet again in the semifinals of the Bank of West Classic. Sharapova, who isthe number 2 seed,made it to last year's final, loosing to Victoria Azarenka. She has a bye for the first round and will play the winner of Daniela Hantuchova and Rika Fujiwara on Wednesday night at the Taube Family Tennis Center on Stanford's campus. Unfortunately, Lisicki did not receive afirst round byeand will play against Simona Halep this afternoon. If she is to win, she will play against the number 4 seed and doubles partner, Samantha Stosur.
Down south about seven hours away at UCLA, some of the top ATP Tour men arecompeting in the Farmers Classic. The list of IMG Academy Bollettieri tennis program alum in the tournament include Ryan Harrison, Tommy Haas, and Xavier Malisse. Kei Nishikori had to withdraw from the tournament because of a shoulder injury. He hopes to be ready for the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington, DC. At the last US Open Series tournament, The Atlanta Tennis Championships, Harrison defeated Malisse in the second round. He moved on the to thesemifinals before loosing to number theone seed and future champion, Mardy Fish. That was Harrison's first career ATP semifinal. Currently, Harrison is tied for third in the Olympus US Open Series rankings. All the action kicks off this afternoon at the LA Tennis CenterlocatedonUCLA's campus.
