IMG Academy alumnus Juan Veloza of the Class of 2013 was named by Golfweek as the 'Freshman to Watch' after carding an incredible 73.2 scoring average in six events. The Cali, Colombia native was named the 2010-11 IMG Junior Golf Tour Player of the Year as a student-athlete.
More from Towson Athletics:
Zunz selected Tiger standout Juan Veloza as the leagues 'Freshman to Watch'. The rookie posted a team-leading 73.2 scoring average in six fall events. He shot a season-best 65 at the Navy Fall Classic.
The magazine also wrote "After finishing second-to-last at the CAA Championship (in 2013), Towson came back with a vengeance in the fall. The team placed in the top 3 at five of its six tournaments. The Tigers came out of the gates in the fall with wins at the Navy Fall Classic and the Cornell Invitational. Towson has eight underclassmen on roster, with Veloza pacing the team with a 73.2 scoring average. But Veloza is supported by the team’s three upperclassmen, who took the next three spots on the team in terms of scoring average. The mix of young talent and consistent veterans could help Towson make a run at a CAA title."
Towson completed the fall season with a 45-15 overall head-to-head won-loss-tie record in six events. The Tigers are the second highest ranked CAA team in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, trailing just four-time CAA champion UNC Wilmington.
