Caymanian junior golfer Johnny Widmer came eighth in the recent Golfweek Invitational.
It was at the New Course in Grand Cypress, Orlando, over 27–28 October. Widmer’s scores were 68 and 70, finishing six under par. The criteria for entry invites only the top 100 junior off the Golfweek Sangrin Ranking. The event was originally three rounds but inclement weather shortened it to two.
Widmer’s next event is for the Cayman Islands men’s team at the Caribbean Cup in Puerto Rico next week then the Junior Orange Bowl in December at the Biltmore Hotel in Miami.
Widmer, 18, has been featured in this paper many times. He was Caribbean Junior Champion last year and despite his tender years is already Cayman’s best amateur. He has attended the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida since Hurricane Ivan. A former Cayman Prep and High school student, he will attend the University of Colorado to study and play competitive Division 1 golf from August of next year.
The Cayman Cup runs from 11–14 November in a Ryder Cup format. It is held every other year.
