IMG Academy’s Jenny Buchanan and Carson Mulholland won their sectional tournaments to qualify for the 38th Junior PGA Championship at the Trump National Golf Club – Washington D.C. in Potomac Falls, Va. Sponsored by Under Armour and Hotel Fitness, the event will be held July 30 – August 2.
17-year-old Buchanan finished the Northeastern New York Section Junior PGA Championship on Saturday, June 29 at the Town of Colonie Golf Course with a two-day total of 152 (+8). The Loudonville, N.Y. native shot a 77 in the first round followed by a 75 in the next round to win by a great margin over second place finisher, Natalie Squillace, who totaled a 186. Buchanan's older brother, Jeb, is an IMG Academy alumnus and went on to become one of the most decorated players in the history of the UCONN men's golf program.
At the Peach Tree Golf & Country Club qualifier in Yuba, Calif., Mulholland (pictured left) topped the standings after carding a 78.
“I have worked with Jenny for the past year and Carson the second semester,” said Coach Heather Nolan. “The girls work so hard and are very determined. It is great for both of them to get their first tournament win and I know that the best is yet to come.”
The Junior PGA Championship springboards competitors into top collegiate athletes as well as PGA and LPGA Tour professionals. Former participants include the world’s No. 1 ranked golfers Tiger Woods and Inbee Park. The Junior PGA Championship qualifiers are comprised of the 41 PGA Sections, nine PGA Junior Series and various national junior tournaments hosted throughout the year. Special invitees under the age of nineteen complete the field of entries.
However, Buchanan and Park were not the only IMG Academy golfers to find success on the links recently. On June 27, 14-year old Mike Wijas added to the IMG Academy accolades by winning the Illinois Junior Golf Association (IJGA) Youth Development Program (YDP)’s inaugural event at the Phillips Park Golf Course in the Boys 12-13 age division. Wijas shot a 74 on the 18-hole course.
