IMG Academy Golf program alumnus Andres Echavarria (2006-07) is one of nine Latin American players in the running at the final stage of the Web.com Tour Q-School, to be held in La Quinta, Calif., Dec. 12-17. As part of his preparation, Echavarria, a native of Medellin, Colombia, stopped by IMG Academy to work with long time coach, Kevin Collins, to tighten up his game.
“[Kevin Collins] knows me inside and out, we’ve been working together a long time and he’s helped me be able to know my swing much better,” Echavarria said. “That’s what we’re working on now, how one little thing you move alters the whole dynamic of the ball’s flight.”
Echavarria graduated from IMG Academy and signed with the Florida Gators men’s golf program. As a collegiate player, went out on top as a First Team All-SEC selection in addition, in addition to many other accolades.
Kevin Collins is eager to see his long-time pupil keep earning his way in the professional ranks.
“Andres is capable of playing with the best players in the world. If he goes out there and takes the experience for what it is and has some fun, he’ll be in good shape,” Collins said of Echavarria’s opportunity in La Quinta. “It’s been fun watching him develop as a player over the past seven years, and he’s right on the edge of giving himself an opportunity to play with the world’s best.”
Echavarria says he intends to re-locate to Florida soon once he has his Tour card. Once he does, he plans to continue training at IMG Academy, a place he credits as helping him develop into the golfer he is today.
“It’s awesome; I got to practice full-time in golf and keep up with academics, so I was able to train harder on golf and in the gym,” Echavarria said of his time as a student-athlete. “You can see it when you come here, but the facilities have only gotten better and better over the years, so you get excited to be back and you get everything you need to be as good as you want to be.”
