Wood Bat League 2013
The world-renowned IMG Academy is the host site for the IMG Wood Bat League. Spread over 450 acres, IMG Academy consists of seven sports and the IMG Academy Athletic & Personal Development program that attract nearly 15,000 youth, collegiate, adult and professional athletes from 100 countries annually. Started by legendary tennis coach Nick Bollettieri as a tennis-only academy with a handful of the game's top players, IMG Academy has over 30-plus years grown into a worldwide leader for helping athletes of all ages and ability levels reach their full potential.
The IMG Academy baseball program launched 15 years ago, with Ken Bolek guiding the program since its inception. Since then, Bolek has helped send countless players to colleges across the nation, as well as working with notable MLB-ers like Mark Buehrle, Adam Dunn, Josh Hamilton, Jamie Moyer, Joey Votto, Ryan Zimmerman and others. In 2009, the Academy team finished 31-1 and in the top 10 of several national polls, with catcher J.R. Murphy going in the 2nd round of the 2010 MLB Draft to the New York Yankees.
From the successful IMG Academy program spawned the IMG Academy Wood Bat League. The league starts every summer with the players going through a multiple-day workout when coaches -- all of whom are IMG Academy baseball or collegiate coaches -- can scout talent in preparation of a strategic, behind-door draft.
Players are then placed onto teams that play a 23-plus game schedule (13-plus for U-14) that includes a regular season and playoffs. The games, however, come second to the training and development.
