IMG Academy has announced that standout high school quarterback Michael O’Connor has joined its inaugural varsity football team. The 6-foot-5, 215-pound, Canadian-born O’Connor has made himself well known in the United States while participating in a battery of elite level camps, such as the Under Armour All-America Combine (Tampa, Fla.); Elite 11 Regional (Columbus, Ohio); Sound Mind Sound Body Camp (Detroit, Mich.); and the Rivals Underclassmen Challenge (DeSoto, Texas).
Of his decision to enroll at IMG Academy, O’Conner said, “I'm just so glad I'm somewhere that I can really focus on football, and I’m excited about the opportunity to work with [Head Coach] Chris Weinke. I know I've found my home now."
“Michael is a great young man who possesses all the qualities we are looking for in our student-athletes that we want leading our team in its first season,” remarked Chris Weinke, Director of Football, IMG Academy. “I believe he has the ability and makeup to be one of the premier high school quarterbacks in the country.”
A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, O’Connor began playing football at the age of seven. He started his high school football career with Ashbury College in Canada, where he threw 51 touchdowns to only seven interceptions in his sophomore season. Seeking a bigger challenge to develop his game, O’Connor opted to play in the United States at Baylor School (Chattanooga, Tenn.) for the 2012 season, helping lead the team to a 7-3 regular season record and a berth in the Tennessee D-II-AA playoffs. O’Connor enrolls at IMG Academy as a junior this spring, and will be a member of the class of 2014.
“Mike is really mature for his age, and I believe in choosing IMG Academy he sought an opportunity to combine his education with serious football training,” said Michael’s father, John O’Connor. “The coaching staff assembled at IMG Academy and the fact that he will get the tutelage of Chris Weinke – who played at the highest levels – will really help Mike develop as a quarterback and teach him the skills he needs to be successful.”
IMG Academy’s football team is set to conduct its first spring practices in March, with the inaugural season to kick off in August. Prior to the high school program’s launch, IMG Academy earned a track record of success with its series of All-Madden camps for elite high school players, as well as its organized 7v7 competitions via the NFA7v7. Additionally, IMG Academy annually prepares dozens of top college players for the NFL Combine and Draft. The 2012 class of NFL Combine and Draft trainees included the likes of RB Alfred Morris (Washington Redskins), QB Russell Wilson (Seattle Seahawks), LB Luke Kuechly (Carolina Panthers), LT Cordy Glenn (Buffalo Bills) and QB Ryan Tannehill (Miami Dolphins).
