Over the weekend, IMG Academy invited Braden River and Cardinal Mooney high schools to compete against the seven-week campers in the first-ever Ascender Shootout. The event created a game experience for campers and provided critical teaching moments for different situations and scenarios that cannot always be taught in practice.
Overall, the event was a huge success with all of the IMG Academy teams notching victories throughout the day. In the first round of games, the IMG Academy seven-week varsity squad was defeated in a nail-biter with Braden River, 46-42. The seven-week junior varsity squad played very well and defeated Cardinal Mooney’s junior varsity team, 56-49, after a strong shooting and rebounding performance.
In the second round of games, the three-week high school campers played very well and defeated Braden River, 43-32. In the final round of the day, the IMG Academy seven-week varsity matched up against the IMG Academy three-week high school squad. The game went to the wire with the seven-week campers prevailing 48-47 on a game-winning layup with nine seconds left.
“The games were a lot of fun for everyone and provided high intensity situations for our campers that’s tough to replicate in practice,” explained Coach Nate Vander Sluis. “The competitive nature of the event gave campers the opportunity to experience a game day experience that full time academy students undergo on a daily basis.” The second shootout in the Ascender Shootout series will take place July 27th at 9:00 a.m. and will include Cardinal Mooney and Lakewood Ranch.
