IMG Academy alumnus Blair Gavin, a member of the Class of 2007 who spent two stints with the IMG Academy Premier Development League team (2007, 2013). In July, Gavin was invited for an eight-day trial with the MLS' Seattle Sounders FC, and yesterday, the former 10th-overall MLS Super Draft selection (2010, Chivas USA) was signed a contract with the Sounders, joining IMG Academy trainee Eddie Johnson on the Sounders roster. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Upon his arrival in Seattle for the initial eight-day trial, Gavin credited his PDL experience for helping prep him for the opportunity: “The PDL experience helped tremendously; the everyday training improved my fitness level,” Gavin said. “It’s difficult to play in the heat [in Florida], and it demands a lot of your body, so I wanted to test my body and see if I was capable playing through the PDL season, which I did, and to get back to IMG which is where my heart is. Scott Dean, Scott Bowers and all those guys helped me a lot.”
Sounders FC made an addition Wednesday, signing midfielder Blair Gavin.
The 24-year-old has been training with the team for several weeks and has played in some reserve games after playing in the PDL with the IMG Academy earlier this year. He had been expected to join Seattle in preseason, but we’ll get an update on what happened when we’re able to talk to him.
Gavin has MLS experience with Chivas USA, which drafted him No. 10 overall in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, and New England, where he was included in a trade for current Sounder Shalrie Joseph. He has played 45 league games, recording three goals and five assists.
“Blair has been training with us for a few weeks and we are very happy to add him to our group,” said sporting director Chris Henderson in a news release. “He is a thinker on the field and has good technical ability. He has enough MLS experience to help us down the stretch.”
Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed per league and team policy, but I’d assume it’s a minimum-salary contract or close to it. The Sounders have open roster spots, as well. Gavin is the third Akron product on the team, joining Steve Zakuani and DeAndre Yedlin.
