Penn State recruit Michael O'Connor will take official visit for PSU-Nebraska game

Penn State quarterback recruit Michael O'Connor has scheduled his official campus visit for the weekend of the Nebraska game on Nov. 23, according to Steve Wiltfong of

O'Connor committed to the Nittany Lions on June 8 and has taken two unofficial visits. The difference this time around? Penn State will pick up the tab as the Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy quarterback prospect takes in the Nittany Lions and Huskers.

O'Connor is a four-star recruit who checks in at No. 242 on the composite rankings. He's listed as the No. 13 pro-style quarterback in the country.

Since committing to Penn State in June, O'Connor has watched from afar as freshman Christian Hackenberg has thrived in two career starts. Hackenberg has completed 45 of 64 passes for 589 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions, including a school freshman record with 311 yards in a 45-7 win over Eastern Michigan.

Like Hackenberg, O'Connor runs a pro-style offense in high school and could make a quicker-than-average transition to the college level. O'Connor has said he's ready to compete as soon as he arrives on campus.

"Obviously he's well aware of who they have on the roster and respects those guys," IMG Academy coach Chris Weinke said. "That was part of the discussion.

"Michael is not afraid of competition. He wasn't going to shy away from competition. Regardless of where you go, they're going to have quarterbacks on the roster. You've got to go where you feel like you can develop best, where the offensive scheme fits you well and where you'll be comfortable."

O'Connor is expected to enroll in January, giving him early practice reps and a jump on coach Bill O'Brien's playbook. Barring unforeseen changes, O'Connor is likely to fall behind Hackenberg and sophomore Tyler Ferguson on the depth chart.

O'Connor is part of a 2014 recruiting class that ranks as high as No. 24 nationally by Limited to 15 scholarships this cycle, O'Brien has gotten 12 verbal commitments to date.
