IMG Academy lacrosse program leaves its marks in first fall showcase appearance
Over the weekend, the IMG Academy Varsity and National lacrosse teams competed in Dave Cottle’s 2013 Fall Lax Invitational in Edgewater, Maryland. With more than 100 college coaches in attendance, IMG Academy left its mark with a 5-1 combined record, and certainly caught the attention of many of the coaches.
Pleased with his teams’ performances, Head Coach Bill Shatz remarked, “I thought the weekend was characterized by great teamwork and having fun.”
The Varsity team competed on Saturday and went 2-1, beating St. Joseph’s Prep (Pa.) and Wissahickon (Pa.) and dropping a close game to Good Counsel (Md.).
The National team went a perfect 3-0 on Sunday, beating the Penncrest Lions (PA), St. John’s (MD), and South River HS (MD). Junior attackman Ben French (Toronto, Canada) and senior attackman Jonathan Thelen (Tampa, Fla.) led all scorers for IMG Academy, while the tandem of goalies Max Smith (Skaneateles, N.Y.) and Parker Smith (Memphis, Tenn.) stonewalled the opposition’s scoring attempts. However, it was a total team effort with virtually every member of the program contributing significantly.
Defensive Coordinator Jason Basso exclaimed, “It was great to see the team gel together so quickly in their first official fall tournament.”
The IMG Academy National team will be back in action this weekend at the Veteran’s Cup in Palm Coast, Fla., Nov. 9-10.
