IMG Academy trainee Sabine Lisicki on pace to her best Wimbledon ever
IMG Academy Bollettieri Tennis trainee Sabine Lisicki, ranked No. 23 in the WTA, is already having the best Wimbledon performance of her career, and on pace for a career milestone - her first Grand Slam title. The German proved that her upset over Serena Williams, the world’s No. 1 ranked player, in the Round of 16 on Monday was not a fluke after ousting Estonian Kaia Kanepi in straight sets at yesterday’s quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-3. In the semifinals, Lisicki faced another daunting challenge against Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska, but came away with the victory, 6-4, 2-6, 9-7. Now, Lisicki has a chance to take her first career Grand Slam title if she can outlast France's Marion Bartoli, ranked No. 15 in the world.
Lisicki has now defeated top-10 women at Wimbledon seven times, including the previous year when she beat the former world No. 1 Maria Sharapova in the fourth round.
This year marks Lisicki’s first time advancing to the semifinals at Wimbledon. She reached the semifinals in 2011 and the quarterfinals in 2009 and 2012.
