IMG Academy's Gianluigi Quinzi turns in valiant performance in Colombia
IMG Academy’s Gianluigi Quinzi reached his second career pro Futures singles final in Colombia at the Colombia F2 Futures in Bogota on Friday. Quinzi, who turned 17-years-old in February, is currently ranked No. 556 on the ATP World Tour.
Along the way to his second career Futures final appearance, Quinzi turned in a valiant performance. In the second round, Quinzi crushed Chile’s Guillermo Rivera-Aranguiz in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Aranguiz is seven years older than Quinzi, and boasted a higher ranking at No. 365 ATP. In the next round, Quinzi had an even bigger test when he took on 25-year old Nicolas Barrientos of Colombia, ranked No. 284 ATP. Quiniz bested Barrientos by a score of, 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-2. In the semi-finals, Quinizi retired his opponent, before eventually falling to 30-year old Carlos Salamanca of Colombia in the final.
A native of Citadella, Italy, Quinzi has been training at IMG Academy since he was eight-years old. In addition to his participation in pro events, Quinzi is currently No. 3 on the ITF Junior World Rankings. He has been ranked as high as No. 1 in the world among juniors.
