Puerto Rico's San Juan Tigers enjoying their time at the IMG Cup- College Showcase; Day 2 Results
Hailing from Puerto Rico, the San Juan Tigers are taking full advantage of the opportunity to play in the IMG Cup - College Showcase. The popularity of soccer has been on the rise in Puerto Rico, and so too has the talent level of the nation's players. Playing in the IMG Cup gives the San Juan Tigers a chance to prove their abilities in front of an audience of college coaches.
“We wanted to come here because of the name and reputation of IMG. It is a well organized and challenging event,” said Head Coach Miguel San Miguel. “I would like for colleges to notice some of our top players; Armando de la Uz, Ricardo Rivera, Ricardo Dip and Jaime Cuebas.”
Although the results on the scoreboard have not favored the Tigers, success is not measured by wins and losses in a showcase. The goal is show off the talent of the players to potential colleges.
“We look to see if they have the ability to perform at the next level,” said Florida International Coach Jean Camere. “Are they doing multiple things at once? Are they covering space, are they reading passing lanes, do they know what they’re going to do with the ball before they get it?”
Even though wins aren’t the focus of the event, the Tigers do not want to go home without a victory.
“It’s been great,” said left-back Juaniel Perez. “We got here yesterday and have played ok, but can do better. We want to win.”
The San Juan Tigers will have one more chance when they play the Wellington Wave White team on Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
The IMG Cup- College showcase will come to a conclusion tomorrow with games starting at 8:30 a.m., and final matches beginning at 12:30 p.m. The event, held on IMG Academy’s West Campus, is open to the public and admission is free.
