Top New Jersey outfielder Luke Bonfield to join IMG Academy
IMG Academy has announced that Luke Bonfield, the No. 1-ranked outfielder prospect in New Jersey and No. 3 overall prospect (No. 69 overall nationally) according to Perfect Game has enrolled.
"I’m looking to maximize my options in my senior year and work against the best competition, so I am excited to head to IMG Academy,” said Bonfield of the decision to join IMG Academy. “I really felt like this gave me the best opportunity to focus on baseball as much as I would like, while maintaining my academics."
The 6-foot-2 Bonfield comes to IMG Academy from Skillman, N.J., where he started for his varsity team since his freshman year. Though injured, during his 2013 high school season Bonfield was able to hit over .400 with 36 RBI and five homeruns, earning All County and All Conference Recognition. Bonfield was one of four New Jersey players in the class of 2014 invited to the East Coast Pro Showcase, sponsored by Major League Baseball. Nine Baseball ranked Bonfield 14th among the more than 150 players in the East Coast Pro Showcase. Additionally, Bonfield was invited to the Area Code Games in Long Beach, Calif. and has been recognized by Perfect Game as a 2012 and 2013 Underclass All-American Honorable Mention. Based on his outstanding performances in the regular season and at elite showcases, Bonfield’s other accolades include: being selected to the 2013 Perfect Game National Showcase in Minneapolis, Minn.; the 2013 Perfect Game BCS Finals in Ft. Myers, Fla., to which is he selected to the All-Tournament Team; the 2013 WWBA 17u National Championship in Atlanta, Ga., to which he was selected to the All-Tournament Team; the 2012 Midwest Underclass Showcase in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and the 2011 National Underclass Showcase - Main Event in Ft. Myers, Fla.
“We are very excited to have Luke with us during the 2013-14 school year,” said Jason Elias of the IMG Academy Baseball program. “Luke has special ability with his bat, and that has shown over the last year, and in the showcase and summer tournament circuit.”
Elias added: “Luke will provide the middle of the order pop that is important for our team's success during the high school season. His ability to play on either corner in the outfield and athleticism to have success in centerfield will be important in regards to the overall versatility of the lineup. Luke will be fun to watch this year.”
Bonfield will add firepower in the batting order to a squad that finished the 2013 spring season on a high note, winning the Cleats Classic Invitational in Mesa, Ariz. in March, and the inaugural IMG National Classic in April.Top returning players include the likes of senior outfielder Andrew DiLacqua (Bradenton, Fla.), committed to Arizona State, and junior outfielder Eric Feliz (Englewood Cliffs, N.J.), who took part in the Perfect Game Underclass All-American Showcase in August and took tournament MVP honors at the IMG National Classic this past spring.
