On Tuesday night, Tommy Haas pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the past decade when he defeated world No. 1 Novak Djokovic to advance to the quarterfinals. The 2013 Sony Open has been Haas’ best performance in the event in all of his 13 career appearances, but he soldiered on and is set for the semifinals of the event. Last night, Haas knocked off France’s Gilles Simon in the quarters, 6-3, 6-1. Haas, the oldest player to defeat a world No. 1 in more than 30 years, will face Spain’s David Ferrer (ATP No. 5) in the semifinals.
On the women’s side of the competition, IMG Academy is well represented in the semifinals, which start today at 1:00 p.m. EST. In the first semifinal match of the day, Maria Sharapova (WTA No. 2) and Jelena Jankovic (WTA No. 24), veterans of the Bollettieri Tennis progam, square off for a spot in the final. They are joined in the semis by fellow Bollettieri Tennis program alumnus and current world No. 1 ranked player Serena Williams who will vie for a spot in the finals today.
