IMG Academy's Nandini Das turned in impressive results during her first ever International Tennis Federation (ITF) juniors event, the Copa-Sultana Myaguez ITF, held in Puerto Rico April 8-13. The 14-year old Das hit the ground running, dominating her first three opponents, Koralie Etienne (PUR), Maria Fernanda Navarro Oliva (MEX) and Grace Hruska (USA) by scores of 6-0, 6-0; 6-1, 6-0; and 6-0, 6-0, respectively. In the semifinal, Das had a slightly tougher time, but dispatched Austria's Alicia Smith, 6-4, 6-2 to make the final of her very first ITF. However, Das' magical run would come to an end in the final match against Brazil's Luisa Stafani, who entered the match with a 21-0 record and two tournament wins on the season. Das fought for every point, but couldn't overcome Stafani, falling by a score of 3-6, 3-6.
Das was joined at the event by IMG Academy's Shweta Sangwan, who was also making her first-ever ITF tournament appearance. The 14-year old Sangwan got off to a strong start with a 6-0, 6-0 straight sets victory in the first round. Sangwan gave it her all in the second round, but came up short against the No. 4 seeded Monica Matias (PUR), bested by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
Das and Sangwan arrived at IMG Academy through the IMG Reliance Student-Athlete Program in 2010. The IMG Reliance Student Athlete program offers aspiring young athletes in India in the sports of tennis, soccer and basketball the opportunity to train under the guidance of world-class coaches at IMG Academy's top-notch facilities.
