After helping lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to one of the best first-half records in baseball, IMG Academy trainees Andrew McCutchen and Pedro Alvarez were named 2013 MLB All-Stars.
It's the third All-Star selection for McCutchen and the first for Alvarez. Past MVP winners and IMG Academy trainees Joe Mauer and Joey Votto were also chosen as All-Star participants.
Nicknamed "El Toro" ("The Bull"), Alvarez has experienced a breakout season for the Pirates with 23 home runs (T-2nd in the NL) and 58 RBI. Alvarez, McCutchen and Pirates 2nd baseman, Neil Walker, all spent significant time during the offseason training at IMG Academy.
Walker: The vision training is something that I really wanted to do. That's what Andrew told us about last season. That’s the biggest thing for me. Not many places offer that type of training.
Alvarez: You don’t really know what’s going on or why your eyes feel tired, but then it dawns on you that it was the vision training. For me, I’m also working on my agility and speed and core work. The first week I was here, I couldn’t even laugh because my core hurt so bad. But everything we do here is functional.
