IMG Academy alumnus J.R. Murphy notched his first MLB hit in his first career at-bat Monday after being called up by the New York Yankees from the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders! Murphy made his Major League debut in front of family and friends in the eighth inning against the White Sox on Monday, Sept. 2. Murphy drilled a ground ball toward third base and beat out the throw to earn his first-career base hit. Murphy was a second-round pick by the Yankees in the 2009 MLB First-year player’s draft (76th overall) following his graduation from IMG Academy.

Murphy began the 2013 season with the Trenton Thunder, where he hit .268 with six home runs and ten doubles in 49 games. Since being promoted to Scranton, Murphy picked up right where he left off, with a .270 average, six home runs and 19 doubles in 59 games while throwing out 37% of potential base stealers. Over his last ten starts with the RailRiders, Murphy has hit .293 with two home runs.

Flashing back to his senior year at IMG Academy, Murphy batted .604 with 64 hits and 66 RBI and 11 homeruns. His efforts helped lead the 2009 team to a historic 31-1 overall record, which included taking the title at four national tournaments and Murphy earning MVP at each tournament.
