In their opening game of the Hall of Fame Classic, the IMG Varsity team defeated Georgetown Prep (Washington DC) by a score of 6-2. Both pitchers stifled the opposing team's hitters for the first 6 innings. Offensively, IMG was able to open up in the 7th with a 5 run inning to take a 6-1 lead. Georgetown Prep battled back in the bottom half, pushing one run across but to no avail.
Brandon Bonilla got the start for IMG, pitching 5.1 innings of no hit ball with 10 strikeouts. After allowing the tying run to score on a wild pitch, Bonilla was replaced by Colin Brown who held the Georgetown offense and the game remained tied 1-1 entering the top of the 7th.
A lead off single by Joe Daru was followed by a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Hutton Moyer. A wild pitched advanced Daru to third and with the infield drawn in, Kirk Dirschl singled up the middle to drive in the go ahead run. Dan Kennon proceeded to double off the left field fence, driving in Dirschl. Tanner Pollack added a RBI double later in the inning and Charles Sheffield drove in Pollack with a RBI single to cap off the 5 run assault.
Colin Brown worked the bottom half of the seventh allowing 1 unearned run on 1 hit while striking out 2 to pick up the win in relief.
Offensively, Sheffield, Daru, and Kennon each finished the day 2-3 with a run scored. IMG will play Episcopal from Jacksonville, FL tomorrow at 10am. Tyler Hesselgesser will get the start on the mound for IMG.
