Last night at the Atlanta Tennis Championships, IMG Academy Bollettieri tennis program alum, Ryan Harrison, won his first round match defeating Japan qualifyer, Yuichi Sugita. The match started off as a walk in the park for Harrison as he easily claimed the first set from Sugita, 6-1. However, Sugita began to fight back and gave Harrison a run for his money in the second set. Harrison defeated Sugita in a closesecond set tiebreak, 7-6(5). Harrison is just nineteen years old. He is the youngest player in the singles draw and the only teenager.
The Atlanta Tennis Championships is the first tournament of the Olympus US Open Series. There are ten other summer tournaments in the series. Players compete for points and rankingthroughout these tournament leading up to the US Open. The players with the highest ranking and points wins additional prize money at the grand slamUS Open.
Harrison will play his second round match against another fellow IMG Academy Bollettieri tennis program alum and fourth seed, Xavier Malisse, tonight at 4 pm on Stadium Court at Racquet Club of the South. Televised coverage of the tournament will begin on July 22 on ESPN 2.
