Growing up, James Byrne always knew that he wanted to be a golfer. He loved the game but was not able to devote all his attention because he was also swimming. It wasn't until the age of 14 that he decided to give up swimming to focus on golf.
The training just got too long and I decided that there were more career opportunities in golf. In swimming you are pretty much competing for pride and medals. Once I stopped swimming I really committed to golf.
He soon got caught up in golf and doesn't even get in the pool anymore. His training regime does not include swimming as part of his cardio routine, âI used up all my pool hoursâ, he said.
Byrne initially came to the United States to earn a scholarship to play golf. After a nearly 2-year search he picked Arizona State University over schools such as Oklahoma, Texas and Cal Berkeley.
Even though Bryne has accomplished so much he holds playing for his country in the Walker Cup amongst the most important in his career, âit was something I will remember for a long time. Individual tournaments can not compare to playing on a team for you country.â
James just recently went pro and his next step is going through Asian Tour Q-School to earn his tour card. âGolf in Asia is growing very fast and spending a year on the tour there would be a great thing for me.â
Byrne came to IMG Academy during a 3 week long break in his schedule to work on his game. He said, â I wasn't playing my best so there is some things I need to work on. The facilities here are top class and world-renowned.
