IMG Academy Bollettieri Tennis alumna Heather Watson is off to a white-hot start in 2014 after missing much of 2013 due to illness. The Guernsey, U.K native and member of the IMG Academy Class of 2009 saw her ranking fall from a career-high of No. 39 WTA in February 2013, to just outside of the top-150 by the year's end. However, Watson is on a mission and quickly regaining ground in the rankings. Over the weekend, Watson was nothing less than dominant, winning the Dow Corning Tennis Classic, a USTA Pro Circuit event, held in Midland, Mich., Feb. 9-16. Through her comeback, Watson has recording an impressive 16-3 record in singles action to begin the year, and jumped 39 spots in the rankings after the win in Michigan to No. 121 in the latest WTA rankings.
More from Eurosport's Sean Fay:
The 21-year-old from Guernsey defeated Ksenia Pervak of Russia 6-4 6-0 in the final of the Dow Corning Tennis Classic in Midland.
Watson, who was unseeded at the event, trailed 1-4 in the first set before winning 11 consecutive games.
She did not drop a set in all five of her singles matches in the tournament.
Watson, was ranked number 39 on the WTA Tour rankings at the start of 2013 before being struck with a case of glandular fever that forced her to miss much of the year’s tennis season.
During her time away from the court she saw her ranking drop outside the top 150 but she has accumulated a 16-3 win-loss singles record to start off 2014.
Watson went into the week ranked 161st but can expect to jump around 40 places thanks to this triumph.
As she has few points to defend from 2013, she should quickly return to the top 100 on the evidence of this form.
