4/20/09 - Lakewood Ranch HS
The JV boys were defeated last night by Lakewood Ranch 11-7 at Academy Park. The boys hit the baseball well, but pitching and defense were lacking. Mike McCormack took the loss for the Panthers and was followed up by Sam Mason, Shawn Wilkes, and Seth Lovely on the mound in the 6-inning time-shortened game. The defense didn't provide much help by committing eight errors. Offensively, the Panthers were led by Ryan Swinney, who went 2-3 with a double and 3 RBI and Dan Kennon, who was 3-4 on the day.
Thank you so much for your patience and understanding throughout the season. I had a great experience with the boys and hope that they enjoyed themselves throughout all of the ups and downs.
My goal for the season was for the boys to become better individuals in regards to respect for the game and humanity in general. I wanted to teach them a sense of discipline that the game demands as they continue to progress into the higher levels of the game.
I know that the process was painful both mentally and physically at times, but I believe that all of the boys will look back in hindsight and understand what Dave and I were trying to accomplish. I must reiterateâ¦I appreciate each of them in their own special way, and I look forward to helping them achieve their academic, athletic, and life goals as time passes by. My door is always open and my phone is always available for any inquiries/questions that you may have and need answered. I wish you the absolute very best until we meet again on or off the field.
Just a side noteâ¦I took the boys to Outback Steakhouse on Saturday and was told by a parent that the boys were commended for their very appropriate behavior in the restaurant. That compliment was more important to me than anything else I have tried to achieve with the boys. Kudos to them and to you as parents for raising such quality individuals!
4/14/09 - Braden River HS
The JV Boys were defeated last night by a score of 6-1. Shawn Wilkes pitched 5 innings giving up 7 hits and allowing 4 runs (3 earned). He struck out 2 and walked 1. Shawn pitched well enough to win, but the defense was severely lacking in execution. As a team, we committed 8 errors. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to win at any level with that type of defensive inefficiency. Our offensive output was not that much better. We only had 5 hits with the bright spot being Ketchum Marsh's double leading the way to our lone run. To the credit of Braden River's pitcherâ¦he was pretty good. The JV record now stands at 13-9.
4/13/09 - Sebring HS
The JV boys beat Sebring 6-3 tonight raising our overall record to 13-8. Joe Daru led the offense going 2-4 with a double, an RBI and 2 stolen bases. Eric Myskowski, Barrett Snyder, and Ryan Swinney also added 2Bs to the overall hit total on the night (8). The defense played fairly well and our pitching staff got the job done again. Mike McCormack pitched 6 innings giving up 2 Earned Runs (3 total) while striking out 1 and walking 3. Mike Hayman got the save by closing out the 7th. The boys have truly started to gel over the last week. I could not be more proud of them at this point.
4/9/09 - Ottawa Hills (OH)
The JV boys won tonight over Ottawa Hills (OH) 8-1. We had another strong pitching performance with Grant Sebastian going 6 innings, striking out 11 and only allowing 1 run. We were led offensively by Barrett Snyder who went 2-4 and Dan Kennon who added 3 RBI. The boys will next take on Sebring on Monday at 5pm.
4/8/09 - Port Charlotte
The JV Panthers defeated the Port Charlotte Pirates 6-2. The JV Panthers probably played their best game of the season tonight in my opinion. Sam Mason led the charge on the mound going 7 strong innings striking out 5 and walking 2. The Panthers were led on the offensive end by Dan Kennon, Taylor West, Eric Myskowski, and Barrett Snyder who each had two hits. Kennon, West and Joe Daru each had doubles and Barrett Snyder added 2 RBI. The Panthers take on Ottawa Hills (OH) at 4pm on Thursday at Academy Park at 4pm for the next contest.
4/2/09 - Lemon Bay HS
The boys dropped to (10-8) overall after losing 1-0 at Lemon Bay HS. Sam Mason threw a complete game giving up 1 run on 4 hits. Unfortunately, the Panther offense was non-existent stranding 8 runners at 2nd and 3rd including bases loaded opportunities in the 2nd and 3rd inning. Jeremy Green led the offense with 2 of the teams 5 hits.
3/28/09 - North Hills (PA) Varsity
The JVs dropped a twinbill to North Hills HS (PA) this afternoon by the scores of 9-1 and 8-4. The Panthers struggled in both games in just about every aspect. The boys only mustered together four hits in Game 1 and were led by Barrett Snyder who had a double. Sam Mason went 4 innings, giving up 5 runs (2 earned) while walking 1 and taking the loss. Game 2 did not prove to be much better for the boys. There were no Panthers with more than one hit. Ryan Swinney led the way with a 7th-inning 3-RBI triple that made the score respectable. Andres Carrillo took the loss going 2 innings and surrendering 7 runs while walking 2 and striking out 1. The boys are back in action next week with a contest at Lemon Bay on Thursday at 6 p.m. and back at home on Friday against Braden River at 4 p.m.
3/24/09 - Lemon Bay HS
The JV Boys won their 10th game of the season 5-4 at Lemon Bay last night. The defense struggled on the night committing 6 errors and the offense was only able to muster up 5 hits. The hero of the night was starting pitcher Grant Sebastian who went all 7 innings allowing 4 runs on 6 hits while striking out 9 and walking none. The win was a team leading 5th for Grant (5-1 overall). The leading hitter on the night was Andres Carrillo who was 1-2 with a walk, RBI and run scored. The JV Panthers will take on North Hills (PA) this Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 11:00am at Academy Park.
3/23/09 - Southeast HS
The IMG Academy JV Panthers defeated Southeast by the score of 8-1. We are now 9-5 overall. Joe Daru led the offense for the Panthers going 2-4 with 2 runs, 2 RBI, a triple and a stolen base. The 8 runs were plated by 6 RBI spread throughout the lineup. The key however was not the offense, but a stellar defensive effort coupled with dominant pitching. Mike McCormack had another very solid outing going 5 1/3 innings, giving up only 3 hits and striking out 4. He allowed one earned run in the 2nd inning. Forbes Slater remained consistent, pitching 1 1/3 innings and allowing only 1 hit and striking out 2 while earning the save, which was his 1st of the year. The defense looked very sound fundamentally and finished the night without making an error. Baserunners combined for 8 Stolen Bases on the night as well. The Panthers travel south to Lemon Bay for a 6pm start tomorrow.
3/19/09 - Hillcreast HS (Texas)
The IMG Academy School JV squad defeated Hillcrest (TX) by the score of 10-0. The game ended in the 5th inning due to the mercy rule. Sam Mason was dominant in his performance going 5 innings giving up only 2 hits and 0 runs. He also had 7 strikeouts and 1 walk. Michael Hayman led the offense going 2-2 with a 2B and an RBI. Ketchum Marsh and Joe Daru each added two RBI to the cause. The Panthers will take on Southeast this upcoming Monday (6pm) at Southeast. Hope all is well!
3/18/09 - Roff HS (Oklahoma)
The JV Panthers defeated Roff (OK) for the second time in three days yesterday. The final score was 8-3. The Panthers were led by Alfredo Escalera who was 2-4 with an RBI and by Taylor West who was 2-3 on the day. Grant Sebastian got his team-leading 4th win on the season after pitching 4 strong innings. The JV boys are back in action on Thursday against Hillcrest (TX) at 2:30pm
3/16/09 - Roff HS (Oklahoma)
Wowâ¦.Great game at AP-2 today. The IMG Academy JV boys beat Roff (Oklahoma) today by a score of 13-3. The offense was lead by Barrett Snyder who had 2 hits and 4 RBI including the walk off 3B to end the game. Ryan Swinney added a 2 RBI 3-4 performance and Dan Kennon had 3 singles as well. Michael Hayman had his best outing of the year going 4 strong innings while giving up 2 runs on 2 hits. Mike McCormack continued his solid efforts on the field by working 2 innings giving up 1 run and earning the save. The boys are putting things together. We still need better execution during the early innings (This coach can never be pleased!). We take on Roff again this Wednesday and then Hillcrest (Texas) on Thursday. Hope all is well!
3/13/09 - Venice HS
The JV Panthers lost a heart breaker on Friday night 6-5 at Venice. Sam Mason threw 5 innings of 3 hit, no run baseball, but the bullpen couldn't hold onto a 4-0 lead. The Panthers entered the bottom of the 7th with a 5-3 lead, but 2 walks, 2 hits and timely execution by the Venice Indians sealed our fate. Mike McCormack lead the offense with 2 hits, including a 2B and a 3B with an RBI. Grant Sebastian also added a 2 RBI single to the cause. The boys are still "learning" to win in different circumstances. Hopefully this loss will be remembered when they are put in a similar situation to finish a ball game.
3/10/09 - Clearwater Central Catholic
The JV boys defeated Clearwater Central Catholic 16-4 last night. Grant Sebastian threw well, going 4 innings and striking out 4 Marauders. The hitting attack was lead by Joe Daru who went 3-3 with a single, double and a Grand Slam (4 RBIs). Carlos Somoza was perfect at the plate going 2-2 with a walk and 2 RBIs. Ryan Swinney added a 3-3 day with 2 RBIs. Hutton Moyer was 2-2 as well with a double and 2 RBI. All in all, the boys tallied 16 hits. We play at Venice on Friday at 7pm and against Lemon Bay at home on Saturday with the first pitch taking place at 4:00pm. I'm looking forward to seeing those of you that can make it!
3/4/09 - Bayshore HS
The JV Panthers lost tonight to the Bayshore Bruins 8-7. The IMG Academy Offense was led by Ryan Swinney who went 3-3 with two Stolen Bases and Forbes Slater who went 2-3 with a double and 2 RBI. The Panthers trailed 5-1 through 5 innings but plated 6 in the top of the 6th led by a two run single by Mike McCormack to put the Panthers up 6-5. Sam Mason executed a Safety Squeeze to give the Panthers some breathing room and a 7-5 lead heading into the bottom half of the 6th. The JV time limit was enforced and the bottom of the 6th became the last half inning to be played. The Bruins plated 2 in the inning and with two outs a base hit to left field scored the winning run off of Sam Mason. Forbes Slater fielded the ball cleanly, made a strong throw and looked to have the Bruin "Dead to Rights", but the runner was called safe and the game was over. Tough one to lose. On Saturday, we will take our third field trip of the year when we travel to watch the Phillies take on the Tigers in Spring Training action. As an added bonus, Jamie Moyer (Hutton's Dad) will be pitching for the Phillies. Needless to say, the boys are excited.
3/3/09 - Braden River
The JV Panthers (4-3) were defeated 4-1 at Braden River tonight. Grant Sebastian turned in his third solid outing on the mound pitching 5 innings and striking out 5. Jeremy Green followed with 1 inning of work and 2 strikeouts. Offensively, the Panthers could not get the job done. On a chilly night under the lights, the JV guys only had 1 hit and struck out a season high 11 times. Baserunners were few and far between which did not allow for any late inning heroics from the IMG Academy bench. It was a good effort on our part, but sometimes things just do not go your way in the game of baseball. Hats off to Braden Rivers starting pitcher that went 7 innings, allowed 1 unearned run and struck out 11 Panthers.
2/27/09 - Clearwater Central Catholic
On Friday, February 27th the JV Panthers defeated Clearwater Central Catholic 10-3 at Academy Park. The Panthers put together a solid team effort that encompassed all areas of the game. Pitching was finally consistent as Sam Mason pitched 4 strong innings giving up 2 runs and striking out 1. Mike McCormack followed suit finishing up the last 2 innings giving up 1 run and striking out 1. Offensively, the Panthers were led by a Tanner Pollack 4-4 day in which he scored 2 runs, hit a 3B, plated 4 RBI and stole 2 bases. Joe Daru also had 2 hits including a 3B with 2 RBI and 2 Stolen Bases. All in all, it was a solid effort full of hustle and passion.
2/25/09 - Bayshore HS
The JV Panthers (3-2) beat Bayshore tonight at home 12-0. Grant Sebastian started the game and threw 4 innings of no-hit ball striking out 7 bears. Forbes Slater threw the final inning of the combined no-hitter striking out 1. It was by far the most efficient performance to date on the mound for the 2009 version of IMG Academy's JV Panthers. The offensive side was just as exciting with Carlos Somoza leading the charge going 3-4 with 2 RBIs. Vernon Trice added a perfect day going 2-2 and adding 2 RBI to the scorebook.
2/23/09 - Venice HS
On Monday February 23rd, the JV IMG Academy Panthers traveled to take on Venice HS in a 7pm contest. The JV Panthers were defeated 8-5 after 6 innings with the game being ended by the time-restriction rule. It was an uphill battle from the get-go as the Venice Indians plated 7 earned runs through the first three innings off of starter Mike McCormack. Five runs were plated by Indians that had walked (4) or been hit by a pitch (1). Sam Mason and Mike Hayman came in to hold the Venice Offense to a relative standstill throughout the final three innings, but 8 runs were enough. The Panther Offense started off slow, but plated three in the 4th and two in the 5th to make it interesting. Carlos Somoza led the IMG Academy "O" with 2 hits including a double and an RBI. Barrett Snyder added a triple and two RBI in the defeat.
2/20/09 - Lakewood Ranch HS
The IMG Academy JV Panthers defeated Lakewood Ranch by a score of 9-8 tonight. After building a commanding 9-4 lead into the last inning, the Panther pitchers surrendered 4 runs on no hits, four walks, and a hit batter. The game ended with the game tying runner being picked off at 1st base by pitcher Seth Lovely. Panther hitters struck early and often throughout the contest being lead by Joe Daru (single, triple, three runs and three stolen bases), Carlos Somoza (two singles, three RBI), and Ryan Swinney(single, double, 3 RBI). Consistent defense and timely hitting was the key to tonight's contest
2/19/09 - Sebring HS
The JV Panthers lost 8-4 tonight in a tough environment at Sebring. The Panthers scored four runs in the top of the first but were matched in the bottom half after giving up four earned runs on four hits and a walk. The Sebring Blue Streaks added two runs in the second and then scored the final two runs of the game in unearned fashion in the bottom half of the fourth.
Offensively, the Panthers were very explosive in the first inning but were quieted after that. Joe Daru led the way going 2-3 with a double, 2 RBI, and 2 Stolen Bases. Tanner Pollack added 2 RBI. Mike Hayman took the loss for the Panthers giving up 7 runs in 2 2/3 innings of work while striking out 2 and walking 2.
The game ended after five innings due to a JV time constraint rule.
2/16/09 - Southeast HS
The JV Panthers went to Southeast HS and got the 1st win of the 2009 campaign. Sam Mason got the win on the mound by pitching the final 3 innings of the contest giving up 1 unearned run and striking out 4. Mike McCormack pitched four strong innings, but left the game with a 5-5 tie on the scoreboard earning himself a no decision. The IMG Academy JV bats were efficient throughout the night scoring 8 runs on 8 hits. Tanner Pollack lead the way with 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Eric Myskowski added a hit, 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. All in all, it was a good first effort. There is much more to be achieved throughout the season. I am very excited with our intensity and believe that we will be very successful as we execute more efficiently in all aspects of the game.
