Day one of the first annual Florida Cup has come to an end with allthe IMG teams fighting for a spot at the top of their group.
The U-19 boys came off an unproblematic win early in the morning but had their work cut out for them mid-afternoon. Taking the field vs. Lakeland, confidence was elevated and it showed early. Two first half goals put IMG in good position to capture the top spot in the group. An unassisted goal by David Armani gave the home team an early lead. The speed of Ariel Hughes, saving a ball from crossing the touchline, made its way past Lakeland goalkeeper and IMG ended the half looking good at 2-0.
Unfortunately that would be the last goal that IMG scored but not the last of the game. Two direct free kicks, given up close to goal caused trouble for the goalkeeper and both caused the game to be tied 2-2. That would be the final score. One win and one tie for the day.
For the U-16 Boys, the story is the same. One good win early, one tied soon after. As IMG took the lead early it was a constant battle for them to keep it. After the final whistle, the game ended at a 2-2 standstill. Nothing less than a win tomorrow will help the cause for a playoff spot.
Both the U-17 Boys and U-16 girls struggled to find a rhythm. Two losses for the girls have them down but not out. On the boys side Coach DeMatthaeis went 1-1 and is looking for a spark in tomorrow matches.
