Major League Soccer preseason friendlies continued at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., with Eastern Conference rivals D.C. United and Chicago Fire meeting once again on the pitch. Chicago had previously bested D.C., 2-0, on Saturday night, and today Chicago came out on top again, defeating D.C. for a third straight preseason win on campus, 1-0.
Chicago and D.C. appeared to be poised for a scoreless draw until the 75th minute when the Fire’s Benji Joya snuck the ball past D.C. goalkeeper Joe Willis off an assist from homegrown product Victor Pineda. Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson preserved a clean sheet with five saves on the day. The Fire’s final match at IMG Academy marked a prime opportunity to evaluate players as head coach Frank Yallop utilized 21 players to keep the team’s undefeated preseason mark intact. Notably, the Fire have not allowed a single goal against through preseason.
