IMG Academy alumnus Aron Johannsson makes himself eligible for US Men's National Soccer team

IMG Academy's Aron Johannsson has chosen eligibility for the US Soccer Men's National Team, and may assume the role vacated by Jozy Altidore

IMG Academy alumnus Aron Johannsson, a member of the class of 2008, recently announced that he has made himself eligible for the U.S. Soccer Men's National Team. The Icelandic striker maintains dual citizenship between the United States and Iceland, by virtue of being born in Mobile, Ala. while his parents attended graduate school, and was able to choose eligibility to either country's national team.

The move gives US Soccer's head coach Jurgen Klinsmann a great option at center-forward with the departure of fellow IMG Academy alumnus, Jozy Altidore, to the Premier League's Sunderland earlier this year. For those that wonder about Johannsson's ability to take on the role for the US, Altidore already endorsed the 22-year old's ability when he said, "He’s a really good player, a player I expect to see a lot of good things from.”

Since graduating from the IMG Academy Soccer program just five years ago, Johannson was a standout player in the Danish Superliga for AGF Aarhus from 2010-2013, then joined the Alkmaar Zaanstreek (AZ) club of the Eredivisie, the highest league in the Netherlands.
