In track and field, professional athletes make hurdling look easy as if they fly over each obstacle in their path. So how can you imitate the speed and long, consistent strides of a professional hurdler? With IMG Academy's How-To track & field drills videos, our coaches give an overview of the techniques and exercises designed to help enhance your skills.
In this video, you will be introduced to three track & field drills to become a better hurdler. Closely watch how the student-athlete performs each drill as well as the important skills demonstrated to improve mechanics, force, and speed over the hurdles. The drills include:
- Clawback
- Skip-Skip Hurdle
- Progressive Hurdle
In the first drill, the Clawback, see how a step-skip motion is used to help emphasize takeoff mechanics and grab back action over the hurdles. The Skip-Skip Hurdle drill builds off of the Clawback and adds emphasis on over-the-hurdle mechanics such as arm positioning, arm block, and trailer leg action at a higher velocity. The final drill, the Progressive Hurdle, focuses on using a three-step rhythm as well as takeoff mechanics to help improve speed through the hurdles.
