Becoming a better tennis player might start with learning how to strike a better forehand, purchasing a newer racquet, or tweaking your backhand grip. But, is there more to the game?
Simply put, yes.
The recipe for getting better at tennis incorporates several aspects of the game, from your mentality to strength and conditioning to tennis nutrition and planning and more! Selecting the right tournament schedule that suites your game yet also challenges you while taking the time to fine-tune your mental toughness and work ethic might seem difficult, but the experts at IMG Academy have countless years of sorting out the routine that can answer your question of “how to be a better tennis player.”
Beginning with a practice schedule that starts with static stretching, leads into agility and footwork drills, and incorporates video analysis with a PlaySight SmartCourt, IMG Academy’s tennis program selects the proper training that can lead to overall development. The practice sessions at IMG Academy occur on a routine basis so players can develop a sense of how college or tournament play will feel while also getting into a routine. With the inclusion of on-campus Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) tournaments, players also have an opportunity to compete in match play settings on a regular basis. Becoming a better tennis player may start with your on-court game, but it’s truly about the mental side of the game, too (and some solid footwork for good measure won’t hurt!)
Although you may have given your mental game some thought, chances are you’re training on the court far longer than you’re training your mind. Three ways to “condition” your mind to perform better are as follows: preparation, perspective and presence. Thus, by preparing with simulations in practice and prior to matches, controlling your stress levels, understanding the process, and staying in the moment, you have the greatest chance at improving your tennis game. And the best part? That’s all without even having to touch a racquet!
Of course, IMG Academy’s practices sustain several hours on the court with drills and match play, but our coaches certainly emphasize the mental side of the game in addition to the technical side.
Once you’re in-tune with your body and mental aptitude, you’ll watch your game get that much better! Let us know your tips and tricks for staying on top of your game and how much you improve after recognizing these triggers.
