Practice makes perfect when it comes to javelin throwing. To throw the javelin as far as possible, athletes must develop a winning combination of speed, power and technique. How can you master your technique in this track & field event? In IMG Academy's track and field drills videos, our coaches give instruction on proper grip, body positioning and javelin positioning to set up a throw that will go the distance.
What You’ll Learn
This video introduces three track & field drills to become a better javelin thrower. Closely watch how the student-athlete performs each drill, paying attention to the skills necessary to improve body mechanics, power, and speed when throwing the javelin. The drills include:
- How to Grip the Javelin
- Executing the Draw Back
- Standing Throw
The first drill, How to Grip the Javelin, introduces the three different kinds of grips (American, Finnish, and Hook) to help you determine which feels best to you.
In the Executing the Draw Back drill, you’ll learn about proper alignment and how to relax the arm, shoulder, and hand when drawing the javelin back to throw.
The final drill, the Standing Throw, shows how to get the most energy into your javelin throw, with a focus on weight distribution and positioning of the feet, hips, and knees.
