The 800-meter race is often described as one of the toughest events in track and field, a demanding combination of speed, endurance, strategy, and mental toughness.
At IMG Academy, that challenge has helped shape one of the top high school 4x800 meter relay programs in the country.
From national records to championship titles, IMG Academy’s middle-distance runners have established themselves as a powerhouse on the national stage through elite coaching, competitive training, and a culture built around performance development.
Watch the story behind the record-breaking team in Episode One of our series, The Pursuit Of Greatness:
“The 800 is kind of the sweet spot between a sprint and distance,” IMG Academy student-athlete Dani Graham explained.
“It takes speed, endurance, and you just need to keep going for dear life,” added her teammate, Aurora Bertelsen.
Unlike shorter sprints or long-distance races, the 800 meters requires athletes to combine explosive speed with sustained aerobic conditioning. Runners must manage pace, conserve energy, and still finish with maximum effort during the final stretch.
“What makes a great 800-meter runner is guts,” Mackenzie Winning shared. “It’s arguably one of the hardest events in track and field. There’s not a step in the race that feels comfortable.”
IMG Academy’s girls 4x800 relay team quickly emerged as one of the most dominant relay groups in high school track and field.
The team captured victories and record-setting performances at some of the nation’s biggest meets, including:
“We were one of the first ever high schools to win the four major meets that high schools have,” Winning explained.
The team also broke national records and posted some of the fastest relay times in U.S. high school history.
Their success was built through a combination of:
Athletes within the program consistently referenced the importance of training alongside teammates who shared similar goals and standards.
One of the defining moments of the season came at the prestigious Millrose Games, one of the most recognized indoor track meets in the country.
At Millrose, IMG Academy faced one of its top rivals, Union Catholic, in a highly anticipated matchup that pushed both programs to elite performances.
“Union Catholic has built an amazing program and a great team and they were able to reset our national record at Millrose Games,” Hannah Gault, an IMG Academy distance coach said.
Rather than viewing the rivalry negatively, IMG Academy athletes embraced the challenge.
“A rival like Union Catholic has honestly been a blessing in disguise,” Gault continued. “It’s good to be challenged in an 800. It’s really easy to lay off the gas and get comfortable if you’re running by yourself.”
The experience reinforced one of the most important principles in middle-distance development: elite competition creates elite performances.
Training for elite competitions requires more than physical preparation. IMG Academy athletes emphasized the importance of race strategy, mental preparation, and execution under pressure.
Before Indoor Nationals, coaches reminded athletes to trust their preparation and commit fully to their race plans.
“Do not leave this track thinking, ‘What could I have done differently?’ Give it your all,” Gault told the team before competition.
That preparation helped the team secure another national championship while continuing to pursue record-breaking performances.
One recurring theme throughout the athletes’ experiences was the value of being surrounded by high-level teammates and competition.
“Last year when I was watching them go and win every big meet, break all the national records, I was like, ‘I want to be there. I want to be on that team,’” Mia Dunavant shared.
At IMG Academy, athletes train alongside nationally ranked competitors while receiving coaching designed to prepare them for collegiate and international competition.
The combination of elite training, performance development, and exposure opportunities helps athletes maximize long-term growth.
