Golf is one of the most rewarding sports in the world, but it’s famously challenging. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced player, you’ve likely asked yourself how to get better at golf. The good news is that improvement is absolutely possible with the right strategies, practice habits, and mindset. In this guide, we’ll cover actionable techniques, expert tips, and professional training opportunities to help you elevate your game.
Before you can master golf’s more advanced skills, you need a strong foundation. Improving your game starts with consistently refining the basics of your swing.
A proper golf grip and stance are the building blocks of a successful swing.
The quality of your swing determines both your distance and your accuracy. For the strongest, smoothest swing, focus on developing consistency by working on these keys:
For personalized swing improvement, consider attending an IMG Academy Golf Camp or take a private lesson at our course, where professional coaches use advanced technology to analyze your mechanics.
Use these three drills to improve your swing path:
The Swing Circle Drill focuses on creating a smooth, on-plane swing path. By tracing a consistent circle with your club, you’ll ensure you’re always striking the ball at the proper angle for truer shots and better accuracy. Using a swing circle also helps golfers develop better rhythm and control. If you don’t have access to a swing circle, practice swinging while standing with your back to a wall, allowing the wall to provide feedback when your backswing becomes too lateral.
At the Noodle Station, players work on controlling clubface angle and swing path using alignment noodles as guides. Stake two pool noodles into the ground upright, about five feet apart, and stand between them. Then practice keeping your club in front of the noodle that’s behind you on your backswing and downswing, following through on the opposite side of the front noodle. This visual and physical feedback trains you to avoid slicing or hooking the ball, while reinforcing proper swing mechanics in a fun, interactive way.
Finally, the Ball Below the Feet Drill strengthens your ability to handle uneven lies and forces proper swing mechanics. Set the ball on a downward slope so that your feet are uphill from the ball. Focus on the angle of your swing. If your clubhead is square to the ball through your swing, you should hit it cleanly. If you’re swinging in the wrong direction, you’ll hit the ground first. Mastering this drill forces precise weight distribution and builds confidence for real course situations on sloped terrain.
Incorporating these golf drills into your routine ensures steady progress, whether you’re looking to lower your handicap or simply make cleaner contact with the ball. Try them today and watch your game transform.
Elevate your performance with these three drills:
The Floatie Drill: helps golfers hit better shots with their irons by preventing overextension on the backswing, which leads to uncontrolled swings and poor impact angles. By practicing light swings with an inflatable pool floatie on the back arm, golfers are trained to avoid bringing the back arm too high and develop a consistent swing path and follow-through.
The Towel Drill: tuck a towel under each of your arms so that it is pulled tight across your chest. Keep the towel in place while you swing, ensuring that your shoulders stay in proper position and you swing with your body, not your arms. Focus on your follow-through, finishing your swing with your chest facing the target and the towel still clenched under your arms.
The Gate Drill: sharpens your swing by training the optimal swing path at the point of impact. Set two tees in the ground, separated only slightly more than the width of your club head. Place a ball between them, and practice hitting so that you connect with the ball without moving either tee. This ensures you’re swinging straight down at the ball, not coming in at an angle.
Your body is your most important piece of golf equipment. A stronger, more flexible golfer is better able to maintain a consistent swing across 18 holes and more apt to avoid injury.
