Build strength, sharpen your mindset, and dominate every match.
Wrestling isn’t just about strength or speed; it’s about discipline, precision, and resilience. The best wrestlers aren’t made overnight. They’re built through consistent habits, intentional training, and a relentless drive to improve.
Whether you’re stepping onto the mat for the first time or chasing elite competition, here’s how to take your wrestling to the next level, straight from IMG Academy Director of Wrestling, Dr. Enock Francois.
Before advanced techniques and highlight moves, there’s one truth every great wrestler understands: fundamentals win matches. “ Consistent focus on fundamentals pays off at every level,” Francois says.
Your stance, motion, hand fighting, and positioning are the foundation of everything you do on the mat. If those aren’t sharp, nothing else will hold up under pressure.
The more you refine these basics, the more confident and dangerous you become in every situation.
Showing up isn’t enough. Improvement comes from intentional training.
“Every practice should have a goal,” advises Francois. “Are you building conditioning? Sharpening a specific technique? Working through tough match scenarios?”
Great wrestlers don’t just “go through drills,” they attack each session with focus.
Ask yourself before practice:
Purpose turns practice into progress.
" The athletes who improve fastest are the ones who listen, ask questions, and apply feedback consistently,” says Francois.
Matches get uncomfortable. You’ll face fatigue, pressure, and adversity. The difference between good and great wrestlers is the ability to stay composed and keep pushing forward.
Mental toughness means:
Train your mind like you train your body. Because when the match gets tough, your mindset is what carries you through.
Like most skills for wrestling, training mental toughness also requires training repeatable mental skills. To start, pick what skill breaks down first - confidence, resilience, focus, commitment, or pressure – and build in a reset routine to refocus when something goes wrong in training. You can also consider using mediation to enhance focus and performance and practice positive self-talk.
You can’t improve if your body breaks down.
Recovery, nutrition, and sleep aren’t optional, they’re essential. The best wrestlers treat their bodies like high-performance machines.
Make sure you:
Preventing injury for wrestlers can include exercises that strengthen shoulder stability.
Band Pulses: Hold a resistance band with arms extended in front or slightly out to the side. Create tension in the band. Perform short, controlled “pulsing” movements (just a few inches of motion), keeping constant tension.
Dumbbell Around the World: Hold a light dumbbell with both hands. Move it in a full circle around your head or torso (front → side → behind → back to front). Keep core tight and movement slow and controlled.
90 Degree External Rotation: Raise your arm so shoulder and elbow are both at 90° (like a goalpost position). Using a band or light dumbbell, rotate your forearm backward while keeping the upper arm still. Return slowly to start.

The fastest way to improve? “Listen, learn, and apply feedback,” says Francois.
The athletes who make the biggest jumps are the ones who stay coachable. They ask questions, absorb feedback, and put it into action consistently.
No matter your level, there’s always another level to reach.
Getting better at wrestling isn’t about one big breakthrough, it’s about stacking small improvements every day.
Master the fundamentals. Train with purpose. Build your mental edge. Take care of your body. Stay coachable.
Do that consistently, and you won’t just improve, you’ll separate yourself from the competition.
