To be the best, it helps if you have two key components—talent and confidence. Having one or the other will only get you so far. When IMG Academy track & field senior student-athlete, Kosi Umerah, discovered her ability in throwing, her newfound confidence helped catapult her into achieving greatness in the rings.
Kosi’s discovery came from attending a track and field camp at IMG. “I had a natural talent for throwing that I didn’t know I had,” she explains. “I hadn’t realized that I could go to college for throwing until our conversation with Coach Mark and until I felt it for myself.”
Mark Stephens, IMG’s Track and Field Throws Coach, saw Kosi’s potential right away. “She didn’t really come here with any expectations,” Stephens says. “She was coming here to be a better track athlete.” Once he saw her perform in the rings, Stephens encouraged her to continue to compete.
In just seven months, Kosi went from being an eager track student-athlete to the national champion in throwing. “I didn’t realize how fast things went by,” Kosi says. “It was a really jam-packed seven months full of experiences.”
This fall, Kosi will head to Vanderbilt University to continue her throwing journey. Her coaches can’t wait to see what she does next. “I think the sky’s the limit,” says Stephens. “I think she’s going to score in the SEC very early in her career, and then later in her career, she has the chance to do some special things.”
