At IMG Academy, success on the basketball court begins long before tip-off. Behind every explosive first step, powerful finish at the rim, and lockdown defensive possession is a comprehensive strength and conditioning program designed specifically for basketball players.
For both boys and girls in IMG Academy’s basketball program, performance training is not an add-on; it’s a cornerstone. The goal is simple: develop stronger, faster, more resilient basketball athletes who can compete at the highest levels of the game.
Basketball strength and conditioning training at IMG Academy is a sport-specific performance program designed to help athletes get stronger, faster, more explosive, and more durable, while directly improving how they perform on the court. What student-athletes do in strength and conditioning varies by age, development goals and season.
IMG Academy’s approach is tailored to the unique demands of basketball.
Players train for:
Basketball is a game of vertical and horizontal explosion. Athletes focus on:
From finishing through contact to battling for rebounds, upper-body strength matters:
A strong core improves balance, control, and injury resistance:
During training, IMG Academy student-athletes integrate speed and agility training that mirrors real basketball movements.
Athletes work on:
This ensures that gains in the weight room translate directly to performance on the court.
One of the most overlooked aspects of basketball development is durability. “We want to make sure that we're able to perform the skills in a safe manner,” said IMG Academy senior strength and conditioning coach Christopher Fluter, who works with the basketball program. “So by learning good movement patterns, we can help decrease the risk of injury.”
For both boys and girls, this approach reduces injury risk while supporting long-term athletic growth.
No two athletes are the same. IMG Academy’s strength and conditioning staff designs development plans based on:
This personalized approach ensures that each basketball player maximizes their potential. The training also depends on what time of year it is, said Fluter. Basketball players lift weights year-round but change their focus and cadence depending on what time of year it is.
“The focus of the training is different in each one of those phases, and it's also different for each age level or group level,” he said.
What sets IMG Academy apart is the seamless integration between performance training and basketball coaching.
“What makes IMG Academy special is just the attention to detail that all the coaches have for all the student athletes,” said Fluter. “There’s constant communication between our staff and basketball staff to help kind of push the program forward or to plan better or to periodize better for the whole year, a day, a session.”
Strength and conditioning coaches collaborate with basketball coaches to:

What is basketball strength and conditioning?
Basketball strength and conditioning is a performance training approach designed to improve an athlete’s strength, speed, agility, endurance, and durability specifically for the demands of basketball. It goes beyond general fitness by focusing on movements like sprinting, jumping, cutting, and changing direction.
What are the strength and conditioning exercises for basketball?
Basketball strength and conditioning programs typically include a combination of strength training, plyometrics, agility work, and conditioning drills. Common exercises include squats, lunges, and deadlifts for lower-body strength; core exercises like planks and rotational work; and upper-body movements for stability and control.
How should basketball players strength train?
Basketball players should follow a structured strength training program that prioritizes movement quality, proper technique, and progressive overload. Training should focus on building functional strength that translates to the court, rather than just lifting heavier weights. This includes full-body workouts, balanced development between strength and mobility, and incorporating recovery into the routine. Programs should also be tailored to the athlete’s age, experience level, and season (offseason vs. in-season) to maximize performance and reduce injury risk.
How to train core strength for basketball?
Core training for basketball should focus on stability, balance, and rotational strength. Instead of only doing traditional ab exercises, athletes benefit from movements that mimic game actions like resisting contact, maintaining body control, and transferring power. Exercises such as planks, anti-rotation holds, medicine ball throws, and controlled rotational movements help build a strong, functional core.
Why is strength training important for basketball players?
Strength training is essential for basketball players because it directly impacts performance, durability, and injury prevention. Increased strength helps athletes jump higher, move faster, absorb contact, and maintain control in high-intensity situations. It also supports joint stability and muscle balance, reducing the risk of common basketball injuries. Ultimately, a well-rounded strength and conditioning program allows players to perform at a higher level and sustain that performance over time.
